DUNE Movie Review: Synopsis

The film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction novel delves into the story of Paul Atreides, the heir of a noble lineage tasked with safeguarding the galaxy’s most precious asset. ‘Dune,’ the first installment of a planned two-part series, unfolds in a distant future where Paul (portrayed by Timothée Chalamet) and his family (House Atreides) are embroiled in a conflict over the perilous desert planet, Arrakis. This planet is crucial as it yields a substance called ‘Spice,’ which facilitates interstellar travel. The cinematic portrayal captures the grandeur and complexity of Herbert’s universe, showcasing futuristic spacecraft, vast fortresses in endless sandlands, and the awe-inspiring presence of the challenging sandworms.

DUNE Movie Review: Storyline And Script Analysis

In the distant future, the planet Arrakis holds immense value as the sole source of ‘Spice,’ enabling interstellar travel across the known galaxy. For years, the wealthy House Harkonnen has controlled Arrakis through the Spice trade. However, a sudden decree from the Emperor orders them to relinquish control to their rivals, House Atreides, now enriched by this transfer of power.

The stage is set with the ongoing conflict between the native people of Arrakis, known as the Fremen, and the oppressive rule of the Harkonnen. The narrative zeroes in on Paul Atreides (portrayed by Timothée Chalamet), son of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). Lady Jessica, a member of the Bene Gesserit, has been secretly imparting their mystical teachings to Paul. Paul, troubled by visions of Arrakis and a mysterious girl (played by Zendaya), becomes increasingly involved in his father’s plan to ally with the Fremen against the impending Harkonnen assault.

As House Atreides settles on Arrakis, it becomes clear that the Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), have struck a deadly deal with the Emperor to eradicate their rivals. Armed with their own forces and reinforcements from the Emperor, the Harkonnen launched a brutal attack. Though Duke Leto falls in battle, Paul and Lady Jessica manage to escape with the help of Atreides’ loyal swordmaster Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), and local ecologist Liet Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster).

Fleeing across the perilous desert, Paul and Lady Jessica face the dangers of Arrakis as they seek refuge among the Fremen, using their unique abilities to survive in this harsh environment.

For certain viewers, Dune Part 1 might come across as lacking in excitement and satisfaction at the end. With the narrative just starting, there’s no definitive conclusion, yet the film’s structure succeeds in addressing many inquiries, and the decision on where to conclude feels fitting in its own manner. The script of the first part of the movie has succeeded in crafting a cinematic marvel that swiftly passes by in its 155-minute duration, all the while leaving viewers craving for an additional three hours to fully unfold the ending.

DUNE Movie Review: Star Performance

Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet delivers a stellar performance as Paul, the sheltered heir to the duke, who may possess the potential to become the legendary ‘Kwisatz Haderach’  a figure akin to a messiah or superhuman. Throughout ‘Dune: Part One,’ Chalamet gracefully steps back to allow the ensemble cast to shine, assuming the role of an observer until the climactic conclusion, which enriches our understanding of the narrative’s intricacies. At first, Chalamet plays Paul as if he doesn’t know much, but as the story goes on, he changes. He starts to understand his strength and what he’s meant to do, which can be seen visually in his acting. Chalamet’s portrayal is nothing short of exceptional. Each of his expressions speaks volumes, highlighting his remarkable acting prowess, commanding screen presence, and unparalleled versatility.

Other Cast

Other notable cast members include Oscar Isaac, who portrays Paul’s noble father, the Duke, Rebecca Ferguson, who brings both mystery and fierceness to the role of Jessica, Paul’s mother; and Zendaya, who aptly portrays Chani. Stellan Skarsgård captivates audiences with his fiercely menacing portrayal of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, stealing every scene he’s in. Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster also deserve praise for their performances.

Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca particularly, stands out for her exceptional portrayal of Lady Jessica, showcasing an impressive emotional range and adding depth to the tense atmosphere of the film.

Zendaya

Zendaya has limited screen time, which may disappoint some viewers. Zendaya’s extensive presence in the movie’s promotional material might create false expectations for her role, despite her character’s significance in the sequel. While the actors deliver strong performances, her brief appearances contribute to one of the major issues with the film.

DUNE Movie Review: Direction And Music

The extended duration and deliberately measured pacing align seamlessly with Villeneuve’s filmmaking style, as expected by those familiar with his work. In Dune, these traits are well-suited, enhancing the viewer’s immersion in the narrative. The lingering camera work lends weight to every narrative moment, evoking a documentary-like experience where the audience feels connected to the unfolding events in real-time.

Thematically, Dune stands out as one of the most complex sci-fi/fantasy narratives. Each scene, whether with dialogue or not, contributes meaningfully to the overall story, leaving no detail without purpose. Even seemingly minor elements, such as shots of spaceships launching or landing, heighten the tension, complemented by Hans Zimmer’s impactful music score and Theo Green’s impressive sound design.

The character development is particularly noteworthy, given the ensemble cast. Through engaging dialogue and gripping action sequences, the writers skillfully flesh out each character, ensuring their individual arcs are compelling and well-realized.

DUNE Movie Review: Final Words

Dune sets a new standard for epic cinema with stunning visuals, immersive sound, and a gripping story. Villeneuve crafts another masterpiece, though pacing issues arise. Chalamet and Ferguson shine in a stellar cast. The film’s intricate screenplay captivates, despite feeling incomplete. Nonetheless, it sets the stage for part two that released recently.
