Shakira Lights Up Times Square With Surprise Concert To Mark New Album Release

In a spectacular turn of events, Times Square found itself at the center of a musical celebration on Tuesday night, not for its traditional New Year’s Eve festivity, but for a spontaneous concert by none other than Colombian sensation Shakira.

Drawing an impressive crowd of approximately 40,000 fans, the Latin music icon took everyone by surprise with a “pop-up” show announced just hours earlier through her social media channels. The occasion? The release of her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, marks her return to the music scene after a hiatus of seven years.

The atmosphere crackled with excitement as a massive electronic billboard emblazoned across a skyscraper counted down the moments to the much-anticipated performance. As the clock struck 7:30 p.m. ET, cheers erupted and two colossal doors concealed within the vibrant display swung open, revealing the TSX Stage, where Shakira kicked off the evening with her chart-topping hit “Hips Don’t Lie.”

Addressing the ecstatic crowd in her signature Spanglish, Shakira expressed her awe and gratitude for the overwhelming support: “Hola New York! Oh my God, this is amazing, absolutely insane. It’s so awesome to see you again, to sing for you… Nothing compares to this. Thank you so much for all the love that you’ve been giving me this week during the release of my new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. And thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up.”

Clad in sleek black attire adorned with silver accents, the self-proclaimed She-Wolf mesmerized her audience with live renditions of her beloved hits, accompanied by a dynamic band and a troupe of dancers. From “Te Felicito” to “TQM,” “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo” to “Puntería,” Shakira’s performance electrified the night, culminating with her iconic track “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

Expressing her joy at being among her fellow Latinos, the multi-award-winning artist bid farewell to the crowd: “I’m happy to be here surrounded by my Latin people. Thank you, New York. Until next time. I love you very much.”

The extraordinary show, co-produced by TSX Entertainment and supported by ViX, Vinfast, and Sony Music Latin, followed Shakira’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she not only showcased “Puntería” but also opened up about her past relationship with soccer star Gerard Piqué and the reasons behind her prolonged album hiatus since 2017’s El Dorado.

“Now I’m husbandless,” declared the She-Wolf, referencing her split from Piqué in 2022 after an 11-year relationship and two children together. “The husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work.”

In an unforgettable evening that fused music, passion, and liberation, Shakira once again proved why she remains an indomitable force in the world of entertainment.
