When confronted with a Florida college student who uses public data and social media to monitor the movements of private jets owned by billionaires, politicians, and celebrities, Taylor Swift seems unable to simply ignore the situation. In late December, Swift’s team sent Jack Sweeney, a junior studying information technology at the University of Central Florida, a cease-and-desist letter. They alleged that his automated tracking of Swift’s private jet inadvertently facilitated potential stalkers in locating her. Attorneys from Venable, the law firm representing Swift, accused Sweeney of effectively providing “individuals with harmful or malicious intentions a detailed plan to execute their schemes.”

Sweeney’s Defense To Taylor Swift’s Case
Jack Sweeney, a 21-year-old student, received threats of legal action from Taylor Swift’s lawyers for sharing her flight details online. He uses publicly available data to track the take-offs and landings of planes owned by wealthy individuals, posting the information a day later. Swift’s legal team argues that this tracking constitutes “stalking.”
In 2022, Sweeney was banned from Twitter following accusations by Elon Musk that he had disclosed Musk’s “assassination coordinates.” Taylor Swift’s attorneys issued Sweeney a cease-and-desist letter in December, claiming that the information he shared posed an “imminent threat to the safety and well-being” of Swift, describing it as a matter of “life or death” for her. Citing numerous instances of stalking in Taylor Swift’s career, the letter asserts that the data Sweeney provides offers criminals “a detailed plan to carry out their schemes.”
Sweeney maintains that he harbors no intent to cause harm, expressing his appreciation for Swift’s music and emphasizing his commitment to transparency and public access to information. He disclosed receiving the threatening letter after media scrutiny intensified regarding Swift’s carbon footprint. In 2022, Swift ranked as the celebrity with the highest private jet CO2 emissions, according to digital marketing firm Yard. The organization found her jet emissions to be approximately 1,185 times higher than the average person’s total annual emissions.

Recently, a 33-year-old man was arrested on stalking charges outside Swift’s residence, with a spokeswoman for Swift attributing some responsibility to posts regarding her jet. While declining to comment on any ongoing police investigations, the spokeswoman indicated a potential link between the timing of stalkers and Sweeney’s posts, which provided precise information on Swift’s whereabouts.
Sweeney’s posts do not divulge information about the passengers on the planes or their destinations upon landing. In addition to Taylor Swift, he has tracked the private flights of other affluent Americans, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.
