Nayanthara's 'Annapoorani' Removed From Netflix After Film Lands In Legal Trouble

The film ‘Annapoorani,’ featuring Nayanthara, has become the centre of controversy, leading to its removal from the Netflix platform. The outrage has resulted in a case being filed against the actor, the film’s director and producers, and Netflix India’s content head. Filed by a right-wing outfit in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, the First Information Report (FIR) alleges that the movie has offended Hindu religious sentiments, disrespected Lord Ram, and promoted ‘love jihad.’

FIR Filed Against ‘Annapoorani’

The FIR, initiated by Hindu Sewa Parishad, lists seven accused, including Nayanthara, director Nilesh Krishnaa, producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran, and Netflix India’s content head Monika Shergill. The charges, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, revolve around promoting enmity among religious groups and common intent.

The allegations in the FIR point to specific scenes in the movie, such as one where Nayanthara’s character, the daughter of a temple priest, is shown offering namaz in a hijab before preparing biryani. Additionally, it claims that the film portrays a friend convincing Nayanthara’s character to consume meat, asserting that Lord Ram and Goddess Sita did the same.

The controversy is further fueled by accusations of ‘love jihad,’ a term used by some right-wing groups to claim the conversion of Hindu individuals by Muslim counterparts. The timing of the controversy, coinciding with the upcoming consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, has intensified the debate. Social media has witnessed widespread support for the complainants, and calls for action against the film’s creators have been vocal.

‘Annapoorani’ Removed From Netflix

Netflix’s response to the situation involves removing ‘Annapoorani’ from its platform in the wake of allegations by Hindu groups that the film is perceived as “anti-Hindu.” The political landscape has also become entangled in the dispute.
