Writer Rishi On Atal Bihari Vajpayee And Pankaj Tripathi

Capturing the lifetime achievements of the late Prime Minister in a single film is no easy task. However, writer Rishi Virmani recalls the unique pitch made to Pankaj Tripathi by director Ravi Jadhav and himself. The film, ‘Main Atal Hoon,’ on Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had to be more than a dry political narrative. It needed to be witty, entertaining, and hopeful. In their initial meeting, Virmani could only narrate the film’s first half-hour. Despite the limited material, by the end of the session, the essence of the movie was captured perfectly, and Pankaj Tripathi was pleased.

Creating a biopic of a leader in a world divided by political ideologies can be challenging. Virmani emphasises that the goal is to portray Vajpayee as a statesman who prioritises public welfare above all else. Vajpayee’s vision was beyond ruling or winning elections; he aimed to make a lasting impact on generations. The film, researched meticulously by the director, aims to showcase Vajpayee’s life with empathy, avoiding a biased perspective. Vajpayee believed in prioritising the country and its people over temporary political interests.

Describing Vajpayee as a sharp statesman and a skilled poet, Virmani states that Pankaj Tripathi was the ideal choice for the role due to his unique ability to capture Vajpayee’s relaxed energy and grace. Tripathi’s mass appeal, evident in his roles in projects like Mirzapur and Criminal Justice, aligns well with the film’s portrayal of Vajpayee in a light that emphasises grace, dignity, and his connection with the masses. Virmani underscores that had Pankaj Tripathi declined the role, the filmmakers would have reconsidered the entire project, highlighting the actor’s irreplaceable contribution to the portrayal of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
