With Monologue Falling Flat, Golden Globes Host Jo Koy Gets Defensive: 'I Got The Gig 10 Days Ago!'

Jo Koy took the stage for the first time as the host of the Golden Globes, but it seems his comedic approach may have missed the mark with both the A-list audience and social media spectators.

Koy kicked off the 2024 ceremony with a lively opening monologue, diving into Hollywood’s fascination with Ozempic and delivering quips about the nominated films. From drawing parallels between Barry Keoghan’s anatomy in “Saltburn” and Bradley Cooper’s prosthetic nose in “Maestro” to suggesting that “Oppenheimer” needed an extra hour, Koy spared no one from his humor.

However, his comment on “Barbie” as a movie about “a plastic doll with big boobies” garnered uncomfortable reactions from Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, who exchanged unamused stares. Koy, undeterred, even turned to “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling, jokingly admitting, “It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll. It’s just something about your eyes, Ryan.”

As the audience response seemed lukewarm, Koy acknowledged the challenges of his new gig, saying, “I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right?” He added, “Slow down, I wrote some of these, and they are the ones you are laughing at.”

The night’s most significant misstep occurred when Koy attempted to poke fun at Taylor Swift, comparing the Golden Globes to the NFL and claiming, “On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.” Swift, seemingly unfazed, continued sipping her drink without reacting. “Sorry about that,” Koy swiftly replied, acknowledging the delicate nature of poking fun at the global pop sensation.

Jo Koy’s hosting debut may not have hit all the right notes, leaving viewers and attendees with mixed feelings about his comedic style at the prestigious awards ceremony.
