The recent confirmation of Richard Lewis’ official cause of death sheds light on the beloved comedian’s passing just days ago at the age of 76.
Hailing from Brooklyn in 1947, Lewis rose to prominence in the early 1970s in the comedy scene. Renowned for his distinctive neurotic and self-deprecating style, his routines often delved into personal struggles, including his battles with alcoholism and mental health issues.
By 1975, media outlets such as the Daily News were heralding Richard Lewis as part of a “new breed” of comedians, alongside icons like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and Andy Kaufman.
In later years, Lewis found a new audience among younger viewers with his recurring role on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where he portrayed a fictionalized version of himself opposite his close friend Larry David.
Over a span of 24 years, Lewis appeared in more than 40 episodes of the acclaimed series, including its pilot in 2000.
The True Cause Behind Richard Lewis’ Passing
According to his death certificate obtained by The Blast, the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” luminary succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest, also known as circulatory or cardiac arrest, at 9:22 p.m. on February 27 at his residence in Los Angeles.
The document further lists Parkinson’s disease as a secondary factor contributing to his demise. Lewis had publicly revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in April of the previous year, concurrently announcing his retirement from stand-up comedy.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder characterized by symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and impaired movement, as outlined by The Mayo Clinic.
