Larry David, the mastermind behind ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ addressed the speculation surrounding the show’s conclusion at the Los Angeles premiere of its 12th and final season. Despite a 24-year run, including a six-year hiatus from 2011 to 2017, the show’s fate has always been uncertain.
Co-star and executive producer Jeff Garlin emphasized the annual uncertainty about the show’s return throughout its history but pointed out that Larry David had never definitively stated that it would be the last season until now. At the premiere, Garlin suggested that when viewers watch the final season, everything will fall into place.
In December, Larry David and HBO officially announced the end of the show. David expressed his eagerness to shed the ‘Larry David’ persona, describing it as a character that derailed him from being the thoughtful, kind person he once was. When questioned about why now was the right time to conclude the series, David bluntly responded, “Because I said so,” asserting that this time it’s truly the end.
Addressing skepticism about the show’s conclusion, David emphasized that he is not lying and recounted his past statements about it being the last season as moments of uncertainty. He clarified that this decision was not a long-term plan but something that emerged early in the current season.
Despite David’s conviction, some cast members are still uncertain. Susie Essman and Cheryl Hines admitted initial skepticism but now believe the show is truly concluding. However, J.B. Smoove remains skeptical, suggesting that David might get bored and return to the show, emphasizing its therapeutic nature.
As for the finale, assuming it is indeed the last, Essman teased it as ‘incredible,’ while Hines expressed satisfaction, predicting that viewers will love the season for its unexpected twists and turns.
Regarding potential spinoffs, Smoove, Hines, and Essman expressed interest, with Essman humorously suggesting discussing the idea with Larry David. The final season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is set to premiere on HBO on February 4.
