Set to hit screens on December 20th, Paramount’s video game-inspired feature, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has secured a thrilling addition to its cast: none other than Keanu Reeves. The acclaimed John Wick actor is set to lend his voice to the beloved character known as Shadow, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
Keanu Reeves’ involvement follows closely on the heels of Paramount’s electrifying presentation at CinemaCon last week, where attendees were treated to the first glimpse of Sonic 3 footage. Among the revelations was the return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, portraying a character who, post-Sonic 2 events, finds himself in a slump until the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog rekindles his spark. Shadow, a character introduced in the Sonic Adventure 2 video game back in 2001, stands as Sonic’s dark counterpart, embodying a brooding intensity that contrasts with the hero’s boundless energy.
Keanu Reeves Arrival: A Sonic Revelation
Paramount’s Sonic movie franchise has been a resounding success since its inception with the 2020 release of Sonic the Hedgehog, which exceeded expectations with a global box office haul of $319 million. Its sequel, Sonic 2, continued the momentum in 2022, grossing an impressive $404 million worldwide. Director Jeff Fowler has helmed all three films, featuring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic alongside James Mardsen as his human ally, Tom Wachowski.
Keanu Reeves, known for his blockbuster performances, has been on a roll in recent years, most notably with his portrayal of John Wick in the action-packed franchise. Prior to his involvement in Sonic 3, he reprised his iconic role as Neo in 2021’s The Matrix: Resurrections. Upcoming projects for Reeves include Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune, where he portrays a guardian angel and a cameo as the renowned assassin in John Wick Presents: Ballerina, a spinoff starring Ana De Armas.
