Dev Patel's Directorial Debut 'Monkey Man' Reveals Action-Packed Trailer And Secures April Release Date With Universal

Dev Patel is set to make his directorial debut with the intense revenge thriller “Monkey Man,” scheduled for theatrical release by Universal Pictures on April 5. Produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, the film’s first trailer was unveiled on Friday, offering a glimpse into a high-octane story of retribution.

In “Monkey Man,” Dev Patel takes on the role of Kid, an anonymous individual scraping together a meager existence in an underground fight club. Each night, donning a gorilla mask, Kid endures brutal beatings from more popular fighters for monetary gain. The narrative draws inspiration from the Hindu legend of Hanuman.

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man Plot

The plot unfolds as Kid, fueled by years of suppressed rage, discovers a means to infiltrate the secretive domain of the city’s sinister elite. Driven by childhood trauma, Kid’s mysteriously scarred hands become the instruments of an explosive retribution campaign, aiming to settle scores with those who stripped away everything from him.

The trailer showcases a brutal and relentless pursuit of vengeance, reminiscent of the action-packed sequences seen in the “John Wick” franchise. Patel’s character employs firearms, blades, and sheer brutality to carve a path through adversaries. In one striking scene, he ruthlessly stabs a man through the neck while gripping a knife between his teeth.

Dev Patel not only stars in but also directs “Monkey Man,” crafting the narrative from his original story alongside co-screenwriters Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Originally slated for Netflix, the film is now part of Monkeypaw’s theatrical deal with Universal.
