Sakshi Malik, India’s female Olympic wrestling medalist, has been named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential individuals of 2024. Her acknowledgment stems from her unwavering stance against the purported sexual misconduct of former Wrestling Federation of India president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, towards female wrestlers.

Teaming up with fellow wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, Sakshi led a high-profile demonstration at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding accountability from Singh for his alleged intimidation and harassment. Commencing in January of the previous year, the protest evolved into a year-long campaign garnering widespread domestic and international support.

Despite legal action, Singh denies the accusations. Sakshi emphasized that their movement transcends wrestling, advocating for the silenced voices of India’s daughters. In a symbolic gesture, she retired from wrestling upon the appointment of Singh’s associate, Sanjay Singh, as WFI president.

Among other notable Indians featured on the list are actress Alia Bhatt, actor Dev Patel, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
