Ian Sandwell, movies editor at Digital Spy, suggests that while ‘The Zone of Interest’ may gain local support due to its poignant subject matter about a family near Auschwitz, ‘Oppenheimer’ is expected to dominate most of the wins across various categories, given its strong performance.

Following its success at the Golden Globes with five wins and leading nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards, ‘Oppenheimer’ is anticipated to compete for best film alongside contenders like ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ and ‘The Holdovers.’

Tim Richards, founder and CEO of Vue International, asserts that ‘Oppenheimer,’ helmed by Nolan, a highly respected figure in the industry, stands as a formidable contender for best film and director categories.

Cillian Murphy In Oppenheimer

Featuring Cillian Murphy as the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film places Murphy and Stone as frontrunners for the leading acting categories. However, predictions for the supporting actor category are less certain, with Sandwell suggesting a potential surprise win for Paul Mescal for his role in ‘All of Us Strangers.’

Despite its status as the highest-grossing film of 2023, ‘Barbie‘ received only five nominations, with the notable omission of Greta Gerwig from the director category, sparking discussions among industry insiders.

The BAFTAs are scheduled to take place on Sunday at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
