King Charles III, an avid cinema enthusiast, has renewed his patronage of the British Film Institute (BFI), the leading body for film in the United Kingdom. The BFI, a cultural charity established in 1933 and governed by the Royal Charter since 1983, is responsible for promoting film and preserving the national archive, including the Royal Collection of films.
The renewal of King Charles’s patronage is a significant endorsement for the BFI. Royal patronage not only boosts the institute’s visibility but also underscores its cultural and historical importance. King Charles has a long history with the BFI, having inaugurated the BFI IMAX in London 25 years ago as the Prince of Wales. He has been a steadfast supporter of the institute, celebrating its milestones and engaging with its community of filmmakers and industry professionals.
In 2018, to mark 40 years of his patronage, King Charles visited the BFI Southbank, where he interacted with BFI staff, alumni of the BFI Film Academy, and notable British actors such as Ruth Wilson, Hayley Atwell, and David Oyelowo. During this visit, he viewed memorabilia from one of his favorite films, “The Pink Panther,” including Peter Sellers’ script with handwritten notes.
Ben Roberts, Chief Executive of the BFI, expressed gratitude for the King’s continued support, highlighting the monarch’s dedication to the arts and the importance of preserving the Royal Collection within the BFI National Archive. Roberts stated, “We are honored to have the Royal Patronage of HM King Charles III and grateful for the support he has already given us as Patron as The Prince of Wales for 45 years, showing his commitment and passion for film along the way”.
King Charles’s return to his royal duties following positive progress in his cancer treatment is a hopeful sign for many.
