Sunny Deol Announces Border 2 on Iconic Film's 27th Anniversary

Widely regarded as one of the finest war dramas in Bollywood, J.P. Dutta’s “Border” celebrates its 27th anniversary today. This cult classic featured a star-studded cast, including Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Pooja Bhatt, Jackie Shroff, Tabu, and others. To mark this milestone, Sunny Deol has announced “Border 2” on social media.

In his announcement, he wrote, “Ek fauji apne 27 saal purane waade ko pura karne, aa raha hai phirse. India’s biggest war film, #Border2.” The film will be produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, and directed by Anurag Singh.

There have been previous rumors about “Border 2” being in development, written and produced by Nidhi Dutta, daughter of JP Dutta. Contrary to initial assumptions, the film is not a direct sequel to the 1997 classic.

A source told ETimes, “Border 2 is not going to be a sequel, but instead, it is a story that took place the same night as Border’s events. The battle was fought not just by the Indian army but also by the Navy and the Air Force, and the story of ‘Border 2’ will recount events from the perspectives of all three wings of the Indian Armed Forces.”

Sunny Deol's Iconic Role in "Border"

Released in 1997, “Border” is a landmark film in Indian cinema. Written, directed, and produced by J.P. Dutta, it is based on real-life events from the 1971 Battle of Longewala and starred Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, and Sunil Shetty in lead roles. Sunny Deol’s portrayal of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri in “Border” (1997) is iconic for its raw intensity and unwavering courage, capturing the essence of a brave Indian Army officer during the Battle of Longewala. His performance remains a powerful symbol of valor and patriotism in Indian cinema.
