Siddharth Anand is facing ridicule on social media following his statement that the film “Fighter” failed to resonate well at the box office because a majority of Indians have not experienced flying in planes. The movie, featuring Hrithik Roshan as an Indian Air Force officer, was released on January 25 but fell short of expectations on its opening day.
Siddharth Anand’s Interview
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Siddharth Anand defended the film’s lukewarm response, attributing it to the uncharted territory it explores. According to Anand, “Fighter” represents a significant departure in terms of genre for Indian audiences, lacking any familiar reference points. He pointed out that approximately 90% of the country’s population has never flown in planes or visited an airport, making it challenging for them to relate to the airborne action depicted in the film.
Anand explained, “Fighter is a huge leap. As filmmakers to do this in the country, and the kind of genre it is. It’s a space that is unexplored and absolutely new. It has no reference point for the audience, that means what they are seeing is a little… such big stars, a commercial director, accha ye planes kya kar rahi he (what are these planes doing)? I am like is this my film, I don’t know this.”

He continued by acknowledging the initial disconnect, stating, “There’s a certain initial disconnect like ‘Mujhe nahi pata ye kya hai (I do not know what is happening)! But once you enter the auditorium, you realize this is such a basic film. It is an emotional kahaani, a very desi story. It appeals to the lowest common denominator as a story. The genre of it is very new, and I think that was the initial hesitance.”
