Noted Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow on Sunday. He has been on the ventilator for the last six days, according to his daughter Somaiyya Rana. His demise marked the end of a poetic era that captivated hearts and minds across generations.
Munawwar Rana had been battling illness for the past two weeks and was on a ventilator for the last six days, revealed his daughter, Somaiyya Rana. Initially admitted to Medanta in Lucknow, the poet was later shifted to SGPGI, where he breathed his last around 11 pm, as confirmed by his son Tabrez.
Throughout his successful career, Rana received many awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poetry collection ‘Shahdaba.’ However, he gave back the award as a way of showing his worry about the increasing lack of tolerance in the country. The poet was often in the news for making controversial statements, especially during the farmers’ protest.
Even with all the challenges and controversies around him, Munawwar Rana’s poetry continued to be a source of comfort and inspiration for many people. He had a special talent for expressing deep emotions in his verses, making him a poet loved by people from different cultures and languages.
