Pakistani vocalist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan attempted to play down a viral video capturing him aggressively beating up a man with his shoe, whom he identified as his disciple. The footage depicts the Qawwali maestro repeatedly hitting and slapping the individual while inquiring about a “bottle.” The man can be seen pleading, denying any knowledge of the mentioned item. In another scene, bystanders attempt to intervene and pull the singer away to protect the student.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Thrashes His Disciple
Samaa TV, a Pakistani broadcasting network, identified the man as Khan’s employee and expressed concern over such violent behaviour among singers becoming a trend. Mr Khan, the nephew of the legendary Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, later clarified that it was a personal matter between an “ustad and his shagird (teacher and disciple).” He released a video featuring the man who was subjected to the altercation and the man’s father to provide context for his actions.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Tries To Clarify His Actions
Rahat said, “This is a personal issue between an ustad and shagird. He is like my son. This is how the relation is between a teacher and his disciple. If a disciple does something good, I shower my love on him. If he does something wrong, he is punished,” he explained in the video. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan added that he had apologised to the man after the incident. But netizens called it a staged attempt to defend his brutality, justify the bashing of his employees and some also suggest that the bottle was allegedly alcohol.
